In 1992, a group of Christian leaders meeting in the Middle East sensed God’s desire to call Christians to pray for the Muslim world. The resulting prayer movement was planned to coincide with the important Islamic month of Ramadan. The dates for Ramadan follow the shorter lunar calendar, so they fall on different dates of our each year. In 2010, Ramadan begins on August 11th.
Praying for 30 days for Muslims during the month of Ramadan does not mean that we conform ourselves to Muslim practices of fasting and prayer. Rather, it allows us to identify with Muslims by praying for them during a significant period of their spiritual lives each year. In no way is it intended as an occasion to show any kind of disrespect.
A limited number of copies of a marvelous printed tool called “30 Days of Prayer for the Muslim World” are available to you in the church office. The only “charge” is to supply your name and email address so that I know who is using the guide to pray. I’ll send an email encouragement throughout the month to those who sign up. You can also order copies of the guide at www.WorldChristian.com.
Consider this testimony from Brother Andrew, founder of Open Doors: “I have been using the 30 Day Muslim Prayer Focus in both English and Dutch for many years. This is a wonderful way to meet the real world of Islam - a world you may not have encountered physically - and to connect them to the throne of God. Being aware of the growing influence of Islam, this book helps us gain the right attitude toward Muslims and to let the compassion of Jesus through us influence their lives. Think big! This is the only way all of us can influence them.”
As we pray, we also are called to serve. On Sunday evening, August 15, we’ll hear the testimony of Muslim background believers who live and witness in the Middle East. Their ministry is funded through the sale of fine Persian rugs; you’ll have an opportunity to bring beauty to your home and the gospel to the lost that night.
I’m proud to be your pastor,
Jerry
