At this season of the year, our attention turns toward Bethlehem as we anticipate the celebration of Jesus’ birth in the “town of David.” This year, I’ve been given other reasons to think fondly of Bethlehem. Our memories of seeing the shepherds’ fields near the ancient village are precious to those who travelled “in the footsteps of Jesus” last fall.
The other reason Bethlehem is on my mind this week is an honor bestowed on Dedi last Wednesday by the Women’s Auxiliary Board of Dallas Baptist University. The “Ruth Award” is named for the central character in the biblical book of that name and recognizes a woman’s dedication to God, family and Christian education. I am very proud that the university overlooked Dedi’s one flaw (poor character judgment—obvious in her choice of husband) and recognized her in such a meaningful way.
I’ve got a few very biased observations to share. In one sense, this award seems “destined”—Dedi had a grandmother named Ruth; I had a grandmother named Naomi. In another sense, recognizing Dedi Carlisle with an award named “Ruth” seems quite deserved. She can “glean” with the best of them; making a lot out of a little is a special gift. Like Ruth, “family” is far more important to Dedi than “location”; the future is more powerful than the past, and her relationship with the Lord is what matters the most. Both Ruth and Dedi are women without pretense, filled with joy to be shared freely. Both are known for trusting God to care for them, aware that His purpose for their families has eternal significance. For Boaz’ sake, I can only hope Ruth was as much fun!
Yep, I’m proud of Dedi Carlisle. I’m also proud to be your pastor,
Jerry
