Dr. Robert Creech serves as Professor of Christian Ministry at Truett Seminary on the campus of Baylor University. Robert has been known to call Dr. Seuss “one of America’s most prominent theologians.” In a recent sermon, Dr. Creech asked his listeners to consider one of Dr. Seuss’ well-known characters: “the Grinch.”
This fellow had several problems, not least of which was that he was green and horribly ugly. But he also had a heart problem:
“The Grinch hated Christmas—the whole Christmas season.
Now please don’t ask why; no one quite knows the reason.
It could be perhaps, that his shoes were too tight.
Or it could be his head wasn’t screwed on just right.
But I think that the most likely reason of all
May have been that is heart was two sizes too small.”
I have discovered that Grinches may sometimes be found in Baptist pews and behind Baptist pulpits. Small hearted, tiny hearted people abide in many places. We draw circles around our lives and set boundaries on who we are willing to love.
What’s the cure for a heart that is “two sizes too small?” God made this promise to all who would enter into a covenant relationship with Him by faith: I will give them a heart to know me, that I am the Lord. They will be my people, and I will be their God, for they will return to me with all their heart. (Jeremiah 24:7)
As we enter the Christmas season, may these words find a tune your heart can play over and over:
Come into my heart, Lord Jesus;
there is room in my heart for You.
I’m proud to be your pastor,
Jerry
