“Jesus says, “Pray because you have a Father in heaven,’” writes Oswald Chambers. What a fitting reminder for this Fathers’ Day weekend for the family of God!

In his Studies on the Sermon on the Mount, Chambers (best known for his book of daily devotional thoughts called My Utmost for His Highest) guides us as we pray because we have a Father in heaven:

When we pray we give God a chance to work in the lives of those for whom we pray. It is the Holy Spirit’s passion for souls that is at work, not our passion, and He can work through us as He likes. Prayer is not getting things from God; prayer is getting into perfect communion with God. I tell Him what I know He knows in order that I may get to know it as He does. If the life of Jesus is formed in me and I am drawing my breath in the fear of the Lord, the Son of God will press forward in front of my common sense and change my attitude to things (pp. 57-58).

“Pray because you have a Father in heaven.”

As we gather to worship, fellowship, and study God’s Word together as a church family today, don’t forget to pray! Pray for God to work in us and through us. Pray that God would show us how to obey Him fully. Pray that God would lead us to release the resources He has entrusted to us to fulfill His purposes. In the next few days, you will hear more about the serious need of our congregation to respond to God’s invitation to give faithfully, generously, and sacrificially. How would your Father in heaven describe your present worship through giving?

As we return tonight to celebrate the freedoms we enjoy in this nation, we will be called to pray. In that conversation with our Father in heaven, we will express our gratitude, ask for guidance, and seek ways to live together that God might choose to bless.

As we scatter this week, we must pray for those in our lives who are far from God. Ask Him to work in their lives; ask Him to work in their lives through you!

Pray for the children and sponsors participating in Kidz Kamp this weekend. Pray for the boys and girls who will share Vacation Bible School together next week. Pray that they will meet their Father in heaven through faith in His One and Only, Jesus.

I invite you to meet to pray at noon in the Chapel each Wednesday. You are welcome! Join us as we meet our Father in prayer.

If My people, who are called by My Name, will humble themselves and pray and seek My face and turn from their wicked ways, then will I hear from heaven and will forgive their sin and will heal their land (2 Chronicles 7:14).
